It’s only Rock and Roll, but I like it!

We are all looking for those great, one of a kind ideas, that help us put our own unique stamp on our home.  I recently encountered a room which had a curved wall, that left little room for furniture. It was also a high traffic area, so it really cut down on my design options. Many considered it a “throw away” wall.

Since the people flipping this home were involved in the music industry, I started looking at design ideas with that in mind.

If you haven’t done it recently, you should check out some of the 1960’s to 1970’s record album covers. Who knew those old record albums had such great style and design! I was inspired and came up with a plan to use them. I went out to some of the stores that deal in nothing but old vinyl records. They were not only knowledgeable but one store had a secret stash in the back that contained great albums but the records were scratched or damaged. Since the quality of the record was not really a concern of mine, I was able to make some great purchases on highly desirable record albums for very little money.

Next I went to frame store and picked up frames that were specifically designed to display record albums.

Displaying in small groups didn’t bring enough “pop” to the wall. So I decided on 16 albums, eight on each side. I chose them by color and design. I also wanted something dramatic in the middle to tie it all together. What I came up with was a vinyl decal of Billy Idol that’s about 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall. It not only took up some of the massive wall space, but tied in the music element and really helped that wall become a statement piece.

The wall went from a “throw away” wall to one of the most talked about areas in the home (all 8,400 square feet of it). Some remembered the albums from their youth, while others enjoyed the designs.  Some just loved the groups and their music. What ever the reason, the consensus was unanimous, everyone loved our “nod to the musician”  wall.

And Billy Idol, well he just loves all the attention!
